The EUSR CAT 1 & 2 course gives you the skills and knowledge to work safely in the utility and energy sectors. It combines theory and hands-on training, teaching you how to:
- Detect buried utilities
- Excavate safely using hand tools
Often called HSG47, Cat & Genny Training, or Safe Digging Practices, this course gives you the confidence and expertise to work effectively in the field.

Course Objective
- Understand key underground legislation and guidelines related to services, excavation, construction, and groundworks, including: HSG47, HSWA 1974, HSG150, CDM 2015, Work at Height Regs 2015, PUWER 1998, Confined Spaces Regulations 1997, EUSMUNC06, EUSMUNC07, COSVR370, and EUSEPUS044.
- Learn how to interpret utility drawings and line search documents.
- Master the use of cable location devices (Cat & Genny) to accurately detect underground utilities.
- Recognise the dangers and hazards involved in ground survey detection.
- Acknowledge the limitations of underground utility detection equipment and drawings.
- Understand the significant costs of utility ‘strikes’ to contractors, stakeholders, and society at large.
- Differentiate between best and poor practices by gaining in-depth knowledge in this specialised field.
- Identify various ground/soil types and adapt to changing on-site conditions.
- Conduct or interpret Risk Assessments and Permits to Work with confidence.
- Implement safe digging practices, including effective hand-digging techniques.
Entry Requirements
- Qualifications: No prior qualifications needed.
- Experience: Industry experience is helpful but not required.
- Age: Must be at least 16 years old.
- Language: Basic English skills to follow instructions, read utility plans, and understand safety guidelines.
- Fitness: A reasonable level of physical fitness is needed for practical tasks. A medical declaration may be requested if relevant.
- PPE: Bring your own PPE, including helmet, gloves, hi-vis clothing, and steel-toe boots.
Course Assessment
The assessment includes:
- Written Test: A short test to assess your knowledge of utility location and excavation safety procedures.
- Practical Assessment: Demonstrating safe utility locating and excavation techniques on-site.
- Course Participation: Completing all course activities and materials.
Successful completion will earn you the EUSR Category 1 & 2 Combined certification.
