The NPORS Cable Avoidance Tool (Experienced) course is designed for individuals with prior experience who want to formalise their skills and enhance their competency. This training focuses on the safe and effective use of Cable Avoidance Tools, ensuring compliance with industry standards and improving workplace safety.
The NPORS Cable Avoidance Tool (Novice) course provides comprehensive training for those new to using Cable Avoidance Tools. This course covers fundamental knowledge of the equipment, introduces key techniques, and teaches best practices aligned with current industry regulations.

Course Objectives
It is envisaged that by the end of this course of training the trainee operator will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operative
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular equipment to be used and be familiar with other sources of information and relevant legislation
- Be able to locate and identify the controls of the equipment and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
- Configure the equipment for use
- Define underground services
- Know how to identify the different types of underground services
- Identify risks that underground services can present and how people may be affected by them
- Causes of accidents from underground services
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
- Carry out detection tasks
- Identify the risks of excavating near to underground services, and the safe digging practices that should be adopted
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
Entry Requirements
- Previous Qualification: Candidates must have successfully completed the NPORS Cable Avoidance Tool course or possess equivalent experience and knowledge in operating cable avoidance tools.
- Experience: A minimum of 3 months practical experience operating cable avoidance tools is recommended to ensure readiness for the course.
- Age Requirement: All participants must be at least 16 years old.
- Language Proficiency: A proficient understanding and communication in English are required for safety and assessment purposes.
Course assessment
The assessment for this course includes both theoretical and practical components:
- Theoretical Assessment: A written test covering essential safety practices, equipment operation, and maintenance.
- Practical Assessment: A hands-on test where you demonstrate your ability to use the Cable Avoidance Tool effectively and safely in various scenarios.
- Experienced Worker Test (Test Only): For experienced individuals, the assessment focuses on validating your existing skills.
Upon successful completion, you will receive NPORS certification, validating your competency in operating the Cable Avoidance Tool.
