Suction Excavator – N021
We offer two NPORS Suction Excavator – N021 training options:
Novice Course
For new operators, this course provides essential training on the safe operation and control of suction excavators. Upon completion, participants will receive NPORS certification, ensuring safe and efficient operations within your business.
Experienced Worker Test
For experienced operators, this test allows your team to demonstrate their skills and earn NPORS certification, validating their expertise in suction excavator operation, site safety, and task handling.

Course Objectives
It is envisaged that by the end of this course of training the trainee operator will be able to answer questions onand perform the following:
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as a suction excavator operator
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular suction excavator to be used
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for suction excavator use
- Explain the different types of suction excavators their advantages and disadvantages when excavating material
- Safely mount and dismount the machine
- Start and stop the engine, compressor and suction hoses safely and efficiently
- Be able to demonstrate how to safely and efficiently use the remote control
- Configure the machine for travel and manoeuvre it safely to the work position in open and confined areas
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
- Manoeuvre the machine to the work area and correctly configure in readiness to carry out excavating tasks
- Demonstrate an emergency stop explaining all relevant safety precautions
- Carry out excavating tasks
- Fit and remove different attachments
- Explain and demonstrate how to deposit material from the suction excavator safely and efficiently
- Environmental considerations
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
Entry Requirements
Previous Qualification
Candidates must have successfully completed the relevant suction excavator training or possess equivalent experience and knowledge in operating suction excavators safely.
Experience
A minimum of 3 months practical experience in operating suction excavators is recommended, though not essential. Onsite industry experience is also helpful in ensuring participants are familiar with the work environment and operational tasks.
Age Requirement
All participants must be at least 16 years old.
Language Proficiency
A good understanding of English, both spoken and written, is required to ensure safety and successful participation in assessments.
Course assessment
Theoretical Assessment
A written test covering key safety practices, regulations, and techniques for operating suction excavators safely, including hazard identification and safe working practices.
Practical Assessment
A hands-on test where you demonstrate your ability to safely operate a suction excavator and manage the equipment in various scenarios.
Upon successful completion, you will receive NPORS certification, validating your competency in suction excavator operation.
