Course Objectives

It is envisaged that by the end of this course of training the learner will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
  • Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
  • Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
  • Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
  • Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
  • Select suitable type of machine relative to the work being undertaken
  • Select the correct cartridges for given task
  • Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for cartridge tool use
  • Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
  • Operate machinery safely and efficiently
  • Environmental considerations
  • Storage and transport of cartridge tool
  • Disposal of waste materials
  • Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures

Entry Requirements

  • Previous Qualification: Candidates must have successfully completed the Chainsaw – Maintenance & Cross Cutting course or possess equivalent experience and knowledge in operating chainsaws, performing maintenance, and cross-cutting.
  • Experience: No prior experience is required, though basic knowledge of machinery and site safety practices is beneficial.
  • Age Requirement: All participants must be at least 18 years old.
  • Language Proficiency: A good understanding of English, both spoken and written, is required to ensure safety and successful participation in assessments.

Course assessment

The assessment for this course includes both theoretical and practical components:

  • Theoretical Assessment: A written test covering key safety practices, chainsaw operation, maintenance, and cross-cutting techniques.
  • Practical Assessment: A hands-on assessment where you demonstrate your ability to safely operate the chainsaw, perform maintenance, and execute cross-cutting tasks effectively.
  • Experienced Worker Test (Test Only): For experienced workers, the assessment focuses on validating your existing skills in operating and maintaining the chainsaw safely.

Upon successful completion, you will receive NPORS certification, validating your competency in chainsaw maintenance and cross-cutting operations.
