Course Objectives: EUSR Category 2 – Safe Excavating Practices
This course teaches essential skills for safely excavating and maintaining holes and trenches using hand tools and handheld power tools. It aligns with key industry standards, including:
- EUSEPUS043: Excavation Work on Underground Cables (Electricity)
- EUSMUNC07: Excavation for Utility Networks Construction
- EUSGNC007: Excavation for Complex Gas Network Operations
The course also follows important HSE guidance, including:
- HSG47: Avoiding Danger from Underground Services
- HSG150: Health and Safety in Construction
What You’ll Achieve
By the end of the course, you’ll be able to:
- Interpret utility drawings and identify symbols and key information.
- Ensure proper safety measures and location marking before starting excavation work.
- Recognise and manage excavation hazards.
- Apply safe digging techniques to carry out and maintain excavations.
This training ensures you meet industry standards for safe excavation work in utility environments.
Entry Requirements
- Qualifications: No prior qualifications needed.
- Experience: Industry experience is helpful but not required.
- Age: Must be at least 16 years old.
- Language: Basic English skills to follow instructions, read utility plans, and understand safety guidelines.
- Fitness: A reasonable level of physical fitness is needed for practical tasks. A medical declaration may be requested if relevant.
- PPE: Bring your own PPE, including helmet, gloves, hi-vis clothing, and steel-toe boots.
Course Assessment
The assessment includes:
- Written Test: A test to check your understanding of excavation safety and procedures.
- Practical Assessment: Demonstrating safe excavation techniques in a real-world setting.
- Course Participation: Completing all training materials and exercises.
Upon successful completion, you will receive an EUSR Category 2 certification.
