Course Objectives
It is envisaged that by the end of this course of training the learner will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:
- Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry and their responsibilities as an operator
- Have a working knowledge of the manufacturer’s handbook for the particular machine to be used
- Be able to locate and identify the major components of the machine and explain their functions
- Be able to locate and identify key controls and explain their functions
- Conduct all pre-operational checks in accordance with manufacturer’s and legislative requirements
- Select suitable type of horizontal directional drilling rig relative to the work being undertaken
- Identify and maintain PPE appropriate for horizontal directional drilling rig use
- Prepare the horizontal directional drilling rig for use
- Conduct all necessary safety checks at the work area
- Operate machinery safely and efficiently
- Environmental considerations
- Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of loading and unloading procedures for machine transportation
- Carry out all end of shift and shut down procedures
Entry Requirements
Previous Qualification
Candidates should ideally have relevant experience or training in operating horizontal directional drilling rigs.
Experience
For the Experienced Worker Test, a minimum of 6 months practical experience operating a drilling rig is recommended. For the novice course, no prior experience is required, but a basic understanding of workplace safety is helpful.
Age Requirement
Participants must be at least 16 years old.
Language Proficiency
A good understanding of spoken and written English is essential for safety and assessment purposes.
Course assessment
Theoretical Assessment
A written test covering key safety practices, drilling rig operation, and workplace safety.
Practical Assessment
A hands-on test where you demonstrate your ability to operate the horizontal directional drilling rig safely and effectively in various scenarios.
Experienced Workers
The assessment focuses on validating your existing skills through the Experienced Worker Test (Test Only).
Upon successful completion, you will receive NPORS certification, confirming your competency in operating a horizontal directional drilling rig.
