EUSR Manual Handling

Course Objective
- Understand why safe manual handling is essential and recognise the common injuries associated with poor manual handling techniques
- Understand employer and employee duties under relevant legislation, including:
- Health & Safety at Work etc. Act 1974
- Manual Handling Operations Regulations (MHOR) 1992
- Identify manual handling hazards and assess risks using recognised risk assessment principles, including TILE / LITE (Task, Individual, Load, Environment)
- Plan manual handling tasks effectively to avoid hazardous handling where possible and reduce risk where it cannot be avoided
- Demonstrate correct manual handling techniques for lifting, lowering, carrying, pushing, and pulling loads
- Recognise unsafe manual handling practices and understand how to correct them
- Understand the role and benefits of mechanical aids and comply with basic responsibilities under PUWER and LOLER
- Apply safe team‑handling principles where required
- Contribute to a safer working environment and reduce the likelihood of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs)
Entry Requirements

- Qualifications: No prior qualifications needed.
- Experience: No previous experience is necessary. The course is suitable for new starters and experienced staff alike.
- Age: Must be at least 16 years old.
- Language: A basic level of English literacy is required to follow instructions, take part in discussions, and understand safety guidance.
- Fitness: A reasonable level of physical fitness is needed for practical tasks.
Assessment
The assessment includes:
Successful learners will have demonstrated an understanding of safe manual handling principles in line with EUSR requirements.
- The assessment involves a multiple‑choice test consisting of 20 questions, set by EUSR and marked by the Approved Trainer.
- Practical Assessment:Learners must demonstrate safe manual handling techniques, including correct lifting, carrying, lowering, and posture, under trainer observation.
